Ceremony honors college graduates

CADILLAC - Baker College of Cadillac hosted a pinning ceremony Thursday for this year's graduating surgical technology students. The graduating class consisted of 10 students.

A guest from Flint spoke, along with a representative student speaker chosen by the other graduates. The members of the class were called forward individually to receive a pin commemorating their accomplishment. Two graduates were recognized for their membership in the Association of Surgical Technologists as honor students.

The surgical technology program has existed at Baker College for the past five or six years, said Mary Gauthier, director of the program. This is the first year Gauthier has been in charge of the department.

“The surgical technology program is quite difficult,” she said. “Pinning ceremonies are a tradition in many old nursing schools and are a nice way to honor the graduating students.”

The pinning served to acknowledge the graduates before they begin work as surgical technologists.

“When these students enter the work force the public won't know who they are, but they will help people every day,” said Gauthier.

The event also recognized the support families provided for the students. Gauthier said, “Many of the students are parents, so they were working fulltime in addition to going to school. It would be virtually impossible for them to have made it without the support of their families.”

Since both students and their family members appreciated the ceremonies, Gauthier said she is planning to turn the pinning into an annual event.

The surgical technology students also participated in the commencement held by Baker College Friday evening.
