Hot day on the course

Cadillac News

BEAR LAKE - The heat and the wind took their toll on this day.

Playing in 90-plus degree temperatures with wind gusts in the 30-mph range made the scores at Monday's Cadillac Area Junior Golf Association tournament at County Highlands balloon a little bit.

Cadillac's Jordan Cater won the event with a 93 (50-43), while Dan Peterson shot a 94, Phil Gorman a 94 and Kody Elzinga a 94. Kyle Ryder was fifth with a 95.

“The wind came into play more on the front nine since this is the first time this season we have seen this strong of a wind,” CAJGA co-director Jack Foster said. “The kids were able to make adjustments on the back nine and the scores went down. This was a good course for the CAJGA kids and it was in excellent condition.”

Mickey Malmborg took sixth with a 96, while Kyle Elzinga shot a 97, Will Richert 98, Scott Coy 103, Chris Bevans 109 and Nick Hillard 109.

On the Division II side, C.J. Malmborg was medalist with a 95, while Ben Chipman shot a 106, Ian Gregorski a 116 and Curtis VanAlst a 129.

With the second-place showing Monday, Gorman's lead in the overall Division I standings has moved to 1,000 points. He stands first at 4,300, while Cater is second at 3,300. Ryder is third at 3,225, Buddy Swaffer fourth at 2,750 and Mickey Malmborg fifth at 2,700.

Eric Hoblet leads Division II with 2,575 points.

The next CAJGA tournament is Monday at the Manistee Golf and Country Club.
