Prep roundup Cadillac News McBAIN - Northern Michigan Christian scored a decisive 68-37 win over Manton Thursday night. “Obviously, I'm really happy with the effort the girls put on the floor,” NMC coach Sandy Pluger said. “They were really focused. They even made the effort to make sure everybody got involved. That was good to see. Pacing the Comets was Brittany Beddler with 14 points, Kelli Jo Koop, Caitlyn Ouwinga and Amberly Brinks all netted 12 points, while Haylee Tebos chipped in nine. Amanda Pluger logged 10 rebounds for the Comets and also chipped in six points. Kayla Juliet led the way for Manton, scoring 12 points while Mallorie Taylor chipped in nine. “We went man-to-man in the second quarter, which helped,” Rangers coach Danielle Petengill said. “We had one player off with an ankle injury and that hurt us.” Petengill continues to work at building her young team and doing her best to prepare them for districts. “We have a whole bunch of stuff to work on,” Petengill said. “We're young and we are continually building. It's a learning process for us. We hope to work up to playing well at the end of the season when it means the most in districts.” Manton (2-7) hosts Frankfort Tuesday while NMC (2-7) also plays Tuesday when it hosts Manistee Catholic. € NMC won the JV game, 41-40, in overtime. Bucks rout Bulldogs LEROY - Pine River got off to a big lead and held on, routing Mesick 64-36. Jamie Olender paced the Bucks with 20 points, Hanna Koetje nailed 12, Rachael Ruppert netted 11, and Myranda McDonald chipped in eight. “We got out big,” Pine River coach Shawn Ruppert said. “I thought the girls' defense got us off good. We gave up too many points against them because we got sloppy.” The Bucks (5-3) take on Lake City Tuesday. Reed City tops Eagles REED CITY - A strong first half helped Reed City to a 77-56 win over Carson City-Crystal in Central State Activities Association play. The Coyotes were up 40-11 at the break before the Eagles made a bit of a game of it in the second half. “We just applied our pressure, went after them and got some easy buckets off defensive transition,” Reed City coach Brian Koopman said. “It was one of those games where you never want to see halftime come because it slowed us down and we let them back in the game.” Lindsay Holmquist paced Reed City (3-6, 3-0) with 18 points, while Bianca Straathof scored 15 and Ali Ruttle 14. The Coyotes have a big one Tuesday, hosting Morley-Stanwood. Eagles top Manistee Cath. MARION - In a great team effort, Marion toppled Manistee Catholic 61-46. Amy Hartsell paced the eagles with 11 points, while Libby Bell and Tierra Eising each nailed 10 and Hilary England chipped in eight. England also logged eight rebounds and four steals. Leading the way for Manistee Catholic was six-foot, two-inch sophomore Ashlee Bauman, sinking 18 points. “It was a good team effort for us tonight,” Eagles coach Tim Michell said. “Almost everyone got into the scoring. I'm very proud of the way our girls share the ball. It's one of the most unselfish teams I've ever coached. It's fun to watch our kids play.” Marion (5-4) hosts Beal City on Tuesday. SOCCER TC Central tops Cadillac CADILLAC - The first 20 minutes of the game made it a rough night for the Vikings as they fell 3-0 to Traverse City Central in a Big North Conference contest at the CASA fields. “All three goals were in the first 20 minutes of the game,” Cadillac coach Luke Rumhor said. “They controlled the ball the first half.” Although Cadillac came out in the second half and played solid soccer, it was not enough to overcome TC Central's lead. “We're getting killed in the first half of the game and we're letting it dictate who's going to win. We're playing a strong second half and then left wondering ‘what if,'” Rumhor said. Rumhor hopes he will see more fire from his team as they face off against the Coyotes at Reed City Saturday. Roscommon blanks NMC ROSCOMMON - Roscommon scored a 3-0 win over Northern Michigan Christian in a Northern Michigan Soccer League contest. “It was a real hard-fought game,” NMC coach Dirk Walhout said. “This is the toughest Roscommon has seen this year. They remain undefeated, but we're happy to give them the two toughest games they have seen this year. “It was a good game to have before tomorrow's game against Clare. We should come out knowing what we can do in this (new) formation and take a win.” Tyler Lutke made 14 saves in the NMC nets. The Comets (9-4-2) are at home today against Clare. Patriots get blanked TRAVERSE CITY - Traverse City Homeschool held the Heritage Christian Patriots scoreless in a 1-0 game. “We gave up a quick goal in the first half and the defensive struggle began,” Patriots coach Dwayne Fewless said. Matt Slater was in the nets for Heritage, logging 15 keeper saves. “We're getting better, slowly but surely,” Fewless said. The Patriots (0-8-1) play at Northport Monday. Coyotes fall to Oilers MOUNT PLEASANT - “We scored one goal, they scored seven,” Coyotes coach Doug Emington said of his team's 7-1 loss to Mount Pleasant. Scoring the single goal for Reed City was Vince Johnson, assisted by Casey Merriss. Scott Marsh played in the nets, logging seven saves, while Alex Ridderman had 13 takeaways. “Despite the lopsided score, I think they played pretty well,” Emington said. “It will help prepare us for our match against Cadillac Saturday.” The Coyotes face off against the Cadillac Vikings on Saturday at Reed City TENNIS Cadillac goes 1-1 SAGINAW - The Cadillac girls' tennis team scored an 8-0 win over Alpena before falling to host Saginaw Heritage 6-2 in a pair of matches. “We started out red hot against Alpena, taking care of business with solid baseline play and good serving,” Cadillac coach Matt Brown said. “Then we ran up against a well-balanced Saginaw Heritage squad.” For Cadillac at No. 1 singles, Lisa Wohlford beat Alpena 6-2, 6-2 and lost to Heritage 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. Rachel Lepine beat Alpena 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 and lost 7-5, 6-3 to Heritage. Libby Dorrell beat Alpena 6-1, 6-2 and beat Heritage 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, while Kristen Dzikowicz beat the Wildcats 6-1, 6-0 and lost to the Hawks 6-0, 7-5. The No. 1 doubles team of Erin Thomsen and Sammie Hawke beat Alpena 6-0, 6-3 and lost 6-3, 6-4 to Heritage. No. 1 singles Cally O'Hagan lost 2-6, 4-6; No. 2 singles Jenna Sheappa lost 6-7, 1-6; No. 3 Lisa Snider lost 6-4, 5-7, 5-10; while No. 4 Amanda Marcotte won 6-2, 6-1. Ion doubles play No. 1 doubles Courtney Hunter and Kristie Rohn won 4-6, 6-4, 10-6; No. 2 Bethany Stadden and Jamioe Osborn won 6-2, 4-6, 10-7; No. 3 Kammi Miller and Taylor Novak won 6-1, 6-4; and No. 4 Chantal Brooks and Sammi Anderson lost 6-2, 3-6, 8-10. CROSS COUNTRY Lake City third at invite KINGSLEY - The Lake City boys took third at the Kingsley Invitational, topped only by Benzie Central (30) and Kalkaska (36). Lake City scored a 65 to claim the third spot. Kyle Schippa took seventh with an 18:40, while Lars Griffith took eighth with 18:44. Josh Fairbrother came in at 19:21, Jacob Nietling at 19:47, and Zach Narovich at 19:59. Lake City didn't have enough runners to field a girl's team, but Leslie Swanson ran the course in 26:57, while Jillian Erickson ran it in 28:49. According to Lake City coach Sarah Root, it was an interesting course because more than 90 percent of the runners took a wrong turn. “The rain washed away some of the white lines,” Root said, “and there were a lot of different places the runners could turn.” Lake City runs in the Highland Conference meet at Marion Tuesday. FOOTBALL Cadillac JV wins CADILLAC - The Cadillac junior varsity football team scored a 14-12 win over Benzie Central. The Vikings got long touchdown runs from Zach Wood and Joey Youngman, while Adam Thomas kicked the two PATs to secure the win. Cadillac is at Traverse City Central next Thursday.
