North Star Quilt Guild hosting first local show

Mardi Suhs | Cadillac News
Dawn Paulin and three other North Star Quilters created this art quilt called Information Highway. They donated the hand and machine appliquŽd quilt to Baker College where it now hangs in the library. It will be on display at the North Star Quilt Show.

CADILLAC - Quilters, those interested in quilting, and even the mildly curious will want to visit the first North Star Quilt Show being held Saturday at Baker College.

“We just wanted to do something bigger,” explained member Dawn Paulin. “We are not charging for our quilt show this year. We've never done one before and we want everyone to come.”

During the five-hour show, eleven demonstrations of quilting techniques will be shown throughout the Baker Student Center, including; hand appliqué, machine appliqué, foundation/paper piecing, cutting, and embroidery. Other demonstrations will include; Grandmother's Flower Garden, machine quilting, hand quilting, crazy quilt stitches, bobbin trapunto and rug hooking.

In addition to a White Elephant sale of sewing related items, there will be door prizes and refreshments. Three vendors will offer fabric, notions, patterns and books for sale.

Three special displays will show off quilted jackets and vests, purses and bags, and the results of the Challenge Quilt.

Last spring guild members were given the challenge of creating a quilt out of five, one-half yards of fabric. Then they were told how to cut them and told to put them back together.

“We haven't seen each others' quilts,” Paulin said. “The Challenge Quilts could be any size. This should be interesting.”

The North Star Quilt Guild encourages anyone interested in quilts to participate and become a member. Donations will be accepted for their “Quilts-for-Kids” project, quilts they make together to give to local charities.
