An afternoon of Custom Interiors

CADILLAC - Margo Kurtzman wants people to know one thing about interior designers - not only can you afford to hire one, a designer just might save you money.

“People are afraid to call designers,” she said. “They think it's going to cost a lot of money. But they can save money by having a plan before they start. This is kind of like a crusade for me.”

To give people a chance to know more about interior design work, Kurtzman will host an informal question and answer session this Saturday afternoon in the community room of the Cadillac Library. She will also discuss how to give your home a fresh new look, including tips for choosing colors, lighting and window treatments.

Kurtzman has a growing list of clients in her new business “Custom Interiors,” a business she developed recently after fulfilling her dream of taking college classes.

“I wanted to study design for a long time,” she said, “but with my hours at our business, I just couldn't commit to the commute. One day I heard they were starting classes at Baker. I loved it - I just loved going to school.”

Kurtzman raised two children and worked at the family business, G&D Pizza, for 30 years. Now she is thrilled to have a second career.

“I feel lucky,” she said. “My family is supportive.”

Although she is a new business owner, she is not totally new to the field of design. After all, she said, she has been decorating her own homes for several years. In addition, she did volunteer work for Baker College by creating a space design for their bookstore and a space plan for the leadership group at Club Cadillac.

“My favorite part of this work is space planning and making sense out of people's home and helping them see it through a different pair of eyes. That's very hard for people to do.”
