State senators taking testimony on service tax proposal in Cadillac CADILLAC — Several members of the Michigan Senate Finance Committee plan to visit Cadillac Friday to get input on the proposed tax for services. The public meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at Baker College’s Cadillac campus, 9600 E. 13th St. Sen. Michelle McManus is one of the senators planning to attend. “I am deeply concerned about the service tax proposal because I don’t believe we should be balancing the budget on the backs of Michigan’s hardworking families and taxpayers. We need to hear from taxpayers, and that’s why we are traveling the state to gather feedback on the proposal,” McManus said. The meeting is the fourth in a series of statewide hearings designed to get public input on Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s proposed 2 percent, $1.5 billion service tax. According to the majority senate communications office, the tax hike would have a significant impact on the state’s economy and jobs. The committee has taken testimony from job providers and individuals across the state on how the plan would affect businesses and the economy.
