Day set aside to clean up Camp Torenta Cadillac — Camp Torenta turns 100 this summer, and like any senior citizen, the camp is showing its age. The 65 acre wooded site on the shores of Lake Mitchell has been in decline for a number of years. Five years ago, a group of concerned citizens formed a committee to stop the deterioration, outline improvements and make sure its unique traditions would be upheld. Dr. Randy Myers, a local optometrist, heads up that steering committee. “Some of us recognized that the facilities were in deterioration,” he said. “This is a valuable piece of property that hasn’t had a lot of improvement and maintenance. The buildings were aging and we sensed that the schools were not going to be able to maintain that.” Although local service groups like the Rotary, Kiwanis and the Lions have made camp improvements through the years, Myers wanted to see a formal plan “for the perpetuation of the camp and camp facilities.” “It’s not just paint and trim,” he stated, “but major capital improvements.” Since the steering committee was formed, the Cadillac Leadership Class pledged to build one or two new cabins and the Rotary is raising funds to renovate the dining hall. The committee is also planning a Friends of Camp Torenta Centennial Reunion on Aug. 18. To help the friends and supporters of Camp Torenta, call Randy Myers at 775-0425.
