Lakers split a twinbill

Cadillac News

ALMA — They never stopped playing and as a result, got a split.

The Cadillac Lakers American Legion Post 94 baseball team was behind to Mount Pleasant in both games Saturday but rallied for a split at Alma College.

Cadillac won the opener 8-4 before falling 14-10 in the second game.

“The thing that impressed me was we were down in both games, but the kids kept coming back,” Cadillac manager Dave Champion said.

“There is absolutely not quit in them. No matter what the score is, they go up there and keep playing ball.”

The Lakers (8-6 overall) trailed 4-3 in the opener before scoring four unanswered runs to win it.

Bryan Diemer got the victory, allowing three earned runs in seven innings of work. He struck out seven and walked just one.

Dylan Jehnzen and Diemer led the way at the plate with two hits and an RBI each, while Mark Fortelka, Jordan Moriarty and Sean Kennedy added a hit and an RBI apiece.

Cody Wagatha, Brandon Champion, Drew Moriarty and Josh Augustat also had a hit apiece.

The Lakers were down 8-0 in the second game before taking a shortlived 9-8 lead. Mount Pleasant rallied, though, to win it.

Fortelka took the loss.

Fotelka led the way at the plate with a hit and two RBIs, while Augustat, Wagatha and Jordan Moriarty had a hit and an RBI each. Jehnzen, Champion and Diemer also had a hit apiece.

Cadillac returns to action today when it hosts Traverse City Central at 4:30 p.m. at Mills Field.
