Community to celebrate blueberries HARRIETTA — When a small Harrietta church met to discuss how to reach out to their neighbors, they discussed the community’s assets. With no local industry, the group focused on the village’s two best things - blueberries and trout. Harrietta is known for raising delicious blueberries at the private farm Blueberry Hill. And trout are raised both at the state hatchery and the private Harrietta Hills Trout Farm. Last spring the group chose the first weekend in August to stage their first-ever Harrietta Blueberry Festival. “This kind of started within our church, the United Methodist,” explained organizer Lori Watson. “One thing led to another and everybody stepped right up. Our community is very excited about it.” The free activities are sponsored by many local organizations and businesses. “Everyone and anybody can come and be involved,” Watson stressed, noting there also would be small fundraising events as well. A full day of events is scheduled for Saturday starting at 8 a.m. with a Blueberry Pancake Breakfast. The day will feature local garage sales throughout the village, blueberry patch tours, fish hatchery tours, and local musicians providing music throughout the day. The 10 a.m. parade will feature everything blue. There will be blueberry ice cream sundaes and children’s games with prizes. For more information call Lori at 231-389-5858.
