Betty Gonyo celebrates 95th

 

Betty (Williams) Gonyo, a former Mesick resident for over 50 years and now residing in Traverse City, will celebrate her 95th birthday on March 15, 2016.

Her family will join her in a celebration later that week. Her children are Nancy (Matt) Gustafson of Monroe, North Carolina, Tom (Pam) Williams of Mesick, Diana Williams of Traverse City, Carol (Chuck) Boyer of Harrietta, and Paul (Patti) Williams of Mesick.Mesick, Diana Williams of Traverse City, Carol (Chuck) Boyer of Harrietta, and Paul (Patti) Williams of Mesick.

Betty was born in Chazy, New York, and after graduating from Chazy Rural Schools, she came to Michigan to attend Michigan State College (now Michigan State University). Following her graduation in 1943 she moved to Mesick to teach in the Copemish and Mesick Consolidated Schools. She married Charles Howard Williams in March of 1945. They made their home in Mesick until Howard’s death in 1981. Betty taught for just over 34 years in Mesick and Copemish and retired in 1984. In the late 1960’s she was named a Merit Mother of Michigan. She was also recognized as Mesick Teacher of the Year in 1979, honored as Region 15-B Coordinatng Council MEA/NEA Outstanding Teacher in 1982 and as Citizen of the Year in 1992 by the Mesick Masonic Lodge. Along with Grace Kohn Betty co-edited the Mesick Centennial Book.

In 1990 Betty attended her 51st class reunion in Chazy. Present that day was a former friend, James Gonyo. Four years later James and Betty were married and have been living in Traverse City since then.
