MANTON — A 32-year-old Cadillac woman drowned Tuesday afternoon while she was tubing on the Manistee River.

The incident happened near Chase Creek in Liberty Township and the first call was reported around 1:12 p.m., according to a Wexford County Sheriff’s Office press release.

After initial investigation it appears that the victim and her tube became lodged in a downed tree across the river, according to the release.

Police said the victim became entangled in a rope connecting two tubes, was not able to free herself and the current pulled her body under the water.

First responders located the victim around 2 p.m. and she was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s body was removed from the river with help from a Wexford County Sheriff’s Office riverboat, police said.

First responders from Cedar Creek Township Fire Department, Manton Fire Department, Northflight EMS and Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officers all responded to the scene, police said.

Names will not be released until family members of the victim are notified.
