LAKE CITY — About 75 cats, 25 dogs and three rabbits are looking for a home in Missaukee County, and on Saturday, you could walk away with one of these critters for virtually no cost.
The BISSELL Pet Foundation will cover the costs of all adoption fees at the Missaukee Humane Society in Lake City this weekend as part of the Empty the Shelters Campaign.
Shelter employee Robin Stouffer said normally it costs $150 to adopt a dog, $40 to adopt a cat, and $60 for kittens.
As part of the campaign, the only payment adopters will be responsible for is a $7 to $12 license fee.
Stouffer said during previous Empty the Shelters Campaign events, the entire shelter was cleared of cats and dogs and they expect similar success this time.
Adoptees will have their choice of pet on a first-come, first-served basis.
Each dog adopted out will be 100 percent vetted, Stouffer said, and will be either spayed or neutered, tested for heart worm and rabies if old enough, and microchipped so they can be located if missing.
Cats also will be spayed or neutered and tested for leukemia and the feline version of AIDS.
Since they expect a large turnout of adopters on Saturday, Stouffer said they would prefer if people submit their applications for a pet ahead of time.
Each prospective adopter will be evaluated to determine if they are a right fit for a pet. Stouffer said a history of animal abuse or record of someone giving up too many animals are examples of conditions that may prevent someone from obtaining a pet.
The shelter will open at 9 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. Saturday. It is located at 5310 W. Houghton Lake Road, Lake City, MI 49651.
