New grief support groups to form in Cadillac

Jan Chopard and Gina Tuch each lost a loved one to suicide. They are now trained facilitators for Michael's Place, a grief support organization in Traverse City, and will work with the new groups formed here.

CADILLAC — A well-known Traverse City grief support center is extending services to the Cadillac area.

Michael's Place, a nonprofit that offers support programs to ease the impact of loss, is establishing a Loss by Suicide support group at the First Presbyterian Church. The group will meet two Tuesday nights per month at 6:30 p.m.

"Michael's Place has been conducting Loss by Suicide groups in Traverse City, and we were approached by an individual in Cadillac who requested getting a group started there," said Melissa Fournier, program director. "This group will be run by a Michael's Place staff person along with trained peer facilitators."

The trained facilitators will include two Cadillac women. Jan Chopard and Gina Tuch each lost a loved one to suicide and have been instrumental in establishing former local grief support groups. Andrew Lehman of Cadillac will also help facilitate.

Anyone interested in attending the group should contact Melissa Fournier to set up an informational visit.

"We felt it was important to extend our services to Cadillac so that individuals are not suffering traumatic loss in isolation," Fournier said.
