LAKE CITY — The Missaukee Humane Society is participating in a multi-state free pet adoption program this Saturday. The Bissell Pet Foundation, a Grand Rapids-based nonprofit, is sponsoring the "Empty the Shelters" event, including 110 shelters like the one in Lake City across 13 states.
The Missaukee Humane Society will have shelter dogs and cats available for adoption, plus some transported to the shelter for the event. The shelter is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Those who adopt must have a valid driver's license or state ID.
The animals up for adoption have all been spayed or neutered and their shots are up to date.
Director Kyle Musselman said more than 20 pets will be shipped to the humane society for the event, in addition to the animals that are already there. It's been a successful program in the past. Those interested in adopting are welcome to come to the shelter before Saturday and fill out the application.
It will be the foundation's 10th event in two years. More than 9,000 pets have found homes because of the initiative, according to a Bissell Pet Foundation press release.
The foundation pays the adoption fee, though adopters are still required to pay licensing fees, which vary by county.
