CADILLAC — Ten students have been named the 2018 award winners in the Cadillac Philharmonic Club Summer Music Camp program.

This year, club members are celebrating the 60th year of helping students attend music camp with their financial awards.

The first awards were given in 1958 for students to attend Interlochen. The program has grown and this year, more than $5,000 has been distributed.

Students that were chosen performed for an adjudicator for evaluations.

Five students that attend Cadillac Heritage Christian School will attend Camp Electric in Cordova, Tennessee: Abigail Fekete and Ethan Stagg will study voice; Wilson Vrieze, drums; Parker Vrieze, bass guitar, and Mackenzie Vrieze, piano and vocals.

Five students will attend Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, Michigan: Liam Chilcote, Cadillac Junior High, for alto saxophone; Mitchell Rogers, Mesick Junior High, clarinet; Makenzie Hamilton, Lake City High School, violin; and Caleb Downey, Cadillac Heritage Christian School, piano.

The fifth student, Victor Sawicki of Cadillac High School, is the recipient of a special award provided by an anonymous donor in memory of Carolyn Szabo, a dedicated musician and educator. Szabo was a music therapist at Detroit Hospital and taught vocal music at Macomb School. Although blind at the end of life, she continued to enjoy music and play for residents at an assisted living home.
