MANISTEE — On Saturday at 9:39 a.m., first responders recovered the body of a 66-year-old female who was reported missing Friday afternoon while windsurfing.

The missing person has been identified as Carolyn Skaff of Frankfurt. She was not wearing a life jacket.

Volunteer members from the Community Emergency Response Team located her body while searching along the shoreline just north of Highland Drive and U.S. 131 on Bear Lake.

An autopsy has been scheduled to determine an exact cause of death. The case remains under investigation.

According to a Manistee County Sheriff’s Office press release, the female was approximately 1/4 mile ahead of her husband when he witnessed her go down, but because of the distance, he was unable to given an exact location.

The surf board she was riding was located on the east shore of Bear Lake; however the sail hasn’t been located. High, gusty winds and wave heights that exceeded 3 feet made the search extremely difficult.

The search was suspended at dark and reconvened in the morning.
