CADILLAC — Marion Walker passed away in December 2018 at age 88.
Born in Alberta, Canada, she left home at age 17 and traveled with a trading company expedition across the frozen Great Slave Lake to take a job 250 miles south of the Arctic Circle in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Later, she enrolled in a nursing program but left before completing her studies in order to assist her parents financially. When the Women’s Division was reinstated Marion joined the RCAF-WD. She was stationed in Clinton, Ontario, and served as Military Police for the base. While on leave she attended a dance where she met Jack (John Leo) Walker, who became her husband of 50 years until his death in 2002. They raised three children: Elaine (Craig Derosier), Gregg (Dorothyann), and Leslie (Dr Pheroze Tamboli).
Marion sold clothing for Queensway To Fashion, worked at James Rogers Jr High, and was a medical assistant for Drs Rosen, and Hefka and McCarroll. She was an active member of the Alter Sodality of St. Germaine Church, and taught catechism at other area parishes.
Marion and Jack lived in Detroit, St. Clair Shores and Boon, Michigan. The Boon property was purchased in 1968 and became their retirement home in 1990. Once a permanent resident of Wexford County, Marion stayed active by volunteering. She was a member of Lions Club, mentored students in reading, was active in Girl Scouts, and participated in ISD and disability-related organizations.
Hobbies included gardening, canning, hunting and crafts. Her joy was in time spent with others, especially her grandchildren Jeremy, Melissa, Sarah, Chloe and Hope, and great-granddaughter, Lakelyn.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2019 at St. Ann Catholic Church in Cadillac, Michigan.
