CADILLAC — Raymond Floyd McDaniel, known as “Papa,‘ sadly passed away Sunday, February 10, 2019 at his home. He was 91.
He was born on August 5, 1927 in Edcouch, Texas, to Ottis (Mayor of Edcouch, Texas) and Valerie (Bollier) McDaniel. After the early death of his mother, his dad married Lillian (Ayer) McDaniel. Raymond worked with his siblings on the family farm and also various jobs in town. He graduated top in his class as valedictorian. He later joined the Army Air Corp serving from 1947 to 1950. He was stationed in Germany for most of his service. After returning to the States he began working for Shell Oil Company as a Seismographic Engineer and retired after 30 years. After retirement, he worked as an independent consultant for 17 years for various companies.
Raymond met and fell in love with his wife Mary (Caruso) McDaniel in Carlsbad, New Mexico, in January of 1953 and they were married on March 5, 1953. They raised three daughters, Frances, Debra, and Rhonda, and buried an infant daughter, Michelle, in 1961 in Sherman, Texas.
Raymond moved his family while working in the oil fields to more than 28 different towns throughout Texas, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Dakota and Michigan. He loved family camping, fishing, yard work and most of all cooking out on his favorite grill. He enjoyed the family vacations and reunions with his brothers and sisters and all his nieces and nephews where he was known as “Uncle Nut‘ for teasing all of them.
After retirement, he settled down in Cadillac, Michigan, where most of his children and grandchildren reside. He enjoyed having coffee with his friends at the Blue Heron and loved socializing with his neighbors, Neil, Frank and Kenny.
Survivors include his loving wife, Mary (Caruso) McDaniel of Cadillac; his daughters and spouses: Frances (Craig) Carney of New Mexico, Debra (Alan) Benson and Rhonda (Gary) Lung all of Cadillac; nine grandchildren: Shelli Richardson, Adrian (Michael) Harvey, Janet (Dan) Howes, Jason Benson and Emily, Jodie (William) Musta, Christopher (Rikki) Lung, Kimberly (Brian) Dawson, Corey Lung and Danielle; great-grandchildren: Andrew, Alix, Sabre, Maddison, Morgan, Greyson, Jacob, Gracie, Jase, Brynlee, Chloie, Carissa, Caleb, Cianna, Tyler, Ellie, Corbin, Grace and Harper; great-great-grandchildren: Marley, Sabre, Jr., and TraeLynn; sisters: Dottie Baird, Betty Lancaster and Peggy (Gary) Walker.
In addition to his parents and stepmother, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Michelle McDaniel; sisters, Patricia Smith and Eugenia Brodton; brothers, Melvin and Glen McDaniel; brothers-in-law, Roger Lancaster, Van Smith, Glenn Baird and Edward Brodton; sister-in-law, Mariam McDaniel; a granddaughter, Heather Carney; a niece, Linda Smith; a nephew, Wagner McDaniel; and a grandson, Bo Richardson.
The family would like to express their appreciation for the for the great care from the caregivers of Munson Hospice of Cadillac and from Munson In Traverse City.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, February 16, 2019 at Peterson Funeral & Cremation Services in Cadillac with Pastor James Martin officiating and full military rites under the auspices of the Cadillac Area Honor Guard. Burial will be at Lucas Cemetery in Missaukee County. Friends may meet the family Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
